DIOCESAN CONFERENCE

Being the Church Today: Tradition and Mission

 May 31st - June 2nd, 2024

The Hayes Christian Conference Centre in Derbyshire

The Sourozh Diocesan Conference is an annual gathering of clergy and laity from Britain and Ireland. It was established in the 1970’s by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom). Each year there is a theme addressed by invited speakers and discussed by the participants. The Conference also provides a valuable opportunity for the members of our extensive diocese to meet one another face to face.

Diocesan Conference at Effingham - ca 1985

The Church is commanded by the Lord to ‘go and make disciples of all nations,...teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you’ (Mt 28: 19-20). Some of Christ's commandments are recorded in the gospels, others were passed down in the church Tradition. St Paul urges his converts to ‘stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter’ (2 Thess 2:15). How can we in our turn preserve and pass on to our children that Tradition and those traditions in a culture that increasingly diverges from its Christian roots? How can we equip ourselves to respond adequately to the increasing numbers of people who are drawn to Orthodox Christianity, who must not only be baptised, but illumined?
The various theological, historical and cultural aspects of these questions will be explored in the presentations of our distinguished speakers as well in discussion groups. We plan to organise a special programme for children aged 6 and over and, as always, our common prayer and fellowship will be at the heart of the conference.
