“Martyrdom and Mission”

The Annual Conference provides a unique opportunity for people to gather in prayer, fellowship and fruitful discourse. It is a weekend away, open to all members of the Russian Orthodox Church in Great Britain and Ireland.

The title of this year's Conference is 'Martyrdom and Mission'.

This year marks the centenary of the unleashing of the violent persecution of the Russian Church, which began in 1918 with the murder of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and of the Royal Passion-Bearers, the Tsar Nicholas II and his family, among others. The ensuing 70 years of persecution, in which countless faithful clergy and laypeople gave their lives for their faith in Christ, ultimately failed to eradicate the Faith and was followed by the remarkable renaissance of the Church over the last 30 years.

This pattern of martyrdom, witnessing to the Faith at the cost of one’s own life, leading to fresh growth of the Body of Christ, is one that has been repeated from the first days of the Church until our own time. Our conference will explore this relationship between martyrdom and mission in a series of talks, seminars and group discussions. There will be a programme for children related to the theme of the conference. As always, our common prayer, together with our bishop and the clergy, will be at the heart of our time together.

The cost of the weekend is from £120 to £170 depending on the type of accommodation selected and includes all meals. For children 6 to 16: £35 to £45. Partial attendance is also possible. Talks will be given in English or Russian, with translation. Places are limited, so please apply as soon as possible after registration opens. As far as resources allow, some financial assistance will be available for those who cannot otherwise afford the full amount of the fees – please apply at once.
